Solange Loves Her Prints

Solange Knowles – one of Vogue’s Best Dressed Woman of the year – proved the high-end style publication RIGHT yet again when she stepped out in a Derek Lam number with funky Giuseppe Zanotti heels and a Lanvin clutch at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in New York City. Everything about this Lanre da Silva Ajayi Couture-inspired look screams out – winning. It’s no wonder Vogue picked Solange for two years in a row for their best dressed list. Thanks to the West African-inspired lace patterns on Solange’s Derek Lam ensemble, that cultural presence is definitely presented. #AfroHipster

African-Inspired Looks at Moschino Cheap & Chic Spring 2013 London Fashion Week

Just when I thought the fashion industry’s obsession with African-inspired wax prints was just for a season or two, Moschino Cheap & Chic designed stunning looks for their Spring 2013 collection at London Fashion Week.

Maybe Moschino’s creative director, Rossella Jardini and Cheap And Chic’s designer, Francesca Rubino is just as obsessed with African batik prints as we are all?

I do however love the tropical, pineapple prints!

Much of this collection I can definitely see on who I call – the industry’s prints ambassador fashionista Solange Knowles. Speaking of Miss Knowles, she was spotted at New York Fashion Week rocking a wax print hat by South African fashion label Babatunde.

Daks from Third World ProFashional Wears Virgos Lounge to London Fashion’s Night Out

Adaku (Daks) From Third World Profashional (better known as one of CulturalToast.com’s favorite Nigerian female blogger) was spotted by the camera lens of Zeldan + Festus in a gorgeous Virgos Lounge outfit!

Here’s the 411 (and yes I had to throw out that MJB old school slang out there): Daks wore this ivory gold pattern beaded Virgos Lounge “Moss” blouse with a blush pink high waist “Holly” skirt with a colorful tribal beaded belt.  She completed her look with a Olivia Pope worthy Prada handbag! (Unfortunately the blouse is sold out BUT the skirt is still up for grabs!)

Love this outfit!

Folake Folarin-Coker of Tiffany Amber Wears Yellow African Ladies Dancing Print Shirt to Her ARISE African Icons NYFW SS 2013 Show

Nigerian designer Folake Folarin-Coker of the successful womenswear brand Tiffany Amber wore a colorful print of African Ladies Dancing from her newly released collection shown at ARISE African Icons NYFW SS 2013 runway presentation at Lincoln Center. (African models Georgie Badiel and Aminat Ayinde walked the runway show.) I predict that this print will be one to watch for in 2013! (I also predict Eku Edewor will be all over this collection in the near future!) Much of Tiffany Amber’s collection stayed true to  her signature soft femimine prints cut in classic silhouettes. Tiffany Amber expertly worked her magic using bright hues of yellow and blue.

Nneka for Minku Autumn/Winter 2012 LookBook

Nigerian-German singer Nneka collaborated with Kunmi and Juan, co-directors of custom handbag label Minku Designs, for their Autumn/Winter 2012 collection while on the European leg of her “Soul is Heavy” promotional tour. Outtakes from the current Mania Magazine cover girl’s photo session can be viewed on minkudesign.com and facebook.com/minkudesign. Sold exclusively at the Nike Center for the Arts in Lekki Lagos, fans can also purchase a custom Minku Designs bag online at shop.minkudesign.com. (You’ll have to admire Nneka for collaborating with African fashion!)

Minku co-directors Kunmi and Juan met up with Nigerian-German singer Nneka for a photo shoot collaboration earlier this month. Nneka was in Barcelona as part of the European promotional tour for her new album ‘Soul is Heavy’.

In a photo shoot that was lively and informal, Nneka modeled some bags from the Minku Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection, that included a five-compartment, red leather travel bag lined with green contrast aso-oke fabric. The collection, ‘Folklorist Reloaded’, expands on the theme of the Minku AW2011 collection — the power of folklorists to unveil old ways and help us imagine new possibilities through their colourful folktales.

Named after prominent folklorists, the bags explore colour through what has become a Minku trademark of combining Sapnish-sourced leathers on the exteriors, and fabrics like aso-oke on the bag interiors.

Angela Simmons Photographed in Virgos Lounge AGAIN thanks to Stylist Kanayo Ebi!

Thanks to hip Nigerian-American fashion stylist Kanayo Ebi, Angela Simmons was photographed out and about in a Virgos Lounge bustier and high-waist floral print skirt! (FYI: Kanayo was with Angela! She’s in the background rocking the haute shades!) I love that Angela continues to show love to the Nigerian/London-based womenswear collection! Angela’s floral print crop top and skirt is sold separately on VirgosLounge.com.

Kudos to Kanayo for continuing to style Angela in Virgos Lounge. I’m eager to see which look she’ll wear next from the collection. Speaking of which this is not the first time Angela has embraced the successful label. Virgos Lounge has expanded their brand to be sold at Topshop. Here’s a brief recap on Angela wearing Virgos Lounge in the past…

At the launch of her new business venture – a hair called Indique, Angela stepped out in a beaded, sequin Virgos Lounge jacket that Nigerian fashion blogger Adaku from Third Word Profashional (aka my Naija fashionista BFF in my head, lol!) was also seen in! According to VirgosLounge.com, the jacket named Aggy is currently sold out! So CulturalToast.com, which lady rocked this jacket the best – Adaku or Angela?

Lira Wears Sylvester Falata & Maria McCloy at the 2012 BET Awards

South African artist Lira looked stunning at the 2012 BET Awards. She wore a beautiful handcrafted dashiki clutch by Maria McCloy, red peep-toe slingbacks by Errol Arendz, and a red one-sleeve sequin gown by South African fashion designer Sylvester Falata. She was the only female artist from Africa to be nominated at this year’s musical event! I love that she (who Glamour South Africa called Woman of the Year) showcase her pride for South African designs! Lira shared several red carpet moments on her Twitter and Facebook pages for her fans. If you’re not following Lira on Twitter, I strongly suggest you do so! @Miss_Lira

Cultural Loop: Adepero Oduye’s Oscar Moment, King Peggy’s Book Release, Omotola Goes Glam for StyleMania, Keke Palmer’s in Loza for Vibe Vixen & Alek Wek’s Deola Sagoe MFW Stunner

This new edition of Cultural Loop highlights Adepero’s Post-Oscar moment, King Peggy’s Book release, Omotola’s glam StyleMania Magazine cover, Keke Palmer’s wearing Loza Maléombho on the cover of Vibe Vixen and Sudanese model Alek Wek bringing Aso-Oke to Milan Fashion Week!

Pariah breakthrough star Adepero Oduye shined at the 2012 Vanity Fair Post-Oscar party. Adepero joined Oscar nominee Viola Davis and Oscar’s In Memoriam performance star Esperanza Spalding in celebrating natural hair. Prior to her Oscar appearance, Adepero as CulturalToast.com first published on Tumblr stepped out in a two-piece yellow and blue ankara paint suit at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards.

Food for thought: Wouldn’t it be great to see Macy AND H&M collaobrating with Jewel By Lisa and prominent African fashion designers like Washington Roberts, Maki Oh, Tsemaye Binitie, Lanre Da Silva, Virgos Lounge and Chichia London for their in-store designer collaborative initiatives???

During my weekly peruse of Barnes & Noble, I check out a hot new recommendation called King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed An African Village. The book chronicles how Peggielene Bartels went from being a secretary at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C to becoming African royalty of her late uncle’s village Otuam. Visit her official website on where to buy her book and to see her book tour dates.

This clip highlights the accomplishments King Peggy made during her month-long Fall 2012 trip to Ghana. She not only distributed food to needy families but open a new well. What a class act!

Nollywood starlet Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde shot a stunning cover shoot for StyleMania March 2012 Magazine. This is by far her best looking cover feature. Follow Omotola on Twitter (@realomosexy) to keep up her latest Nollywood projects. See the full shoot over at OnoBello.com!

Actress Keke Palmer stuck a pose in a Loza Maléombho printed ruffle blouse from her Spring/Summer 2012 collection for the new digitial Vibe Vixen December 2011/January 2012 issue. You can check out Loza’s SS 2012 collection via Facebook. Loza, born in Brazil and raised in Abidjan and Cote D’Ivoire, is a womenswear designer based in New York with a strong mission of women empowerment, social and economic trades in West Africa. Loza’s fly and social conscious – gotta love it!

Sudanese model Alek Wek wore a blue and gold Deola Sagoe Aso-oke dress to Roberto Cavalli Fall 2012 show during Milan Fashion Week. Alek first wore this dress and the same gold criss-cross heels for the inaugural issue of Arise magazine back in November 2008 and at a JoinRED event. Great to see Alek  continue to support Deola! This is a style repeat offender that I appreciate!

Cultural Loop is a must-read news rundown within the fashion & entertainment industry!

Robin Roberts Wears Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2012 Cashmere Scarf

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was spotted outside ABC Studios in Times Square wearing a Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2012 wax print cashmere scarf. According to Burberry.com, Robin’s scarf retails for -drumrolls please- $1,095.00. It comes as no surprise that CulturalToast.com embraces African wax print fashion. I absolutely love it! If you’re following CulturalToast.com’s Tumblr page, there’s plenty more African wax print looks to drool over. The print of Robin’s scarf is very similar to a dress actress Kate Bosworth wore this past October.

Robin’s scarf as you can see is a variation of a skirt seen on the runway during London Fashion Week Spring 2012 and the print was also used as dress as seen on Kate Bosworth. Burberry’s online boutique has a handful of scarves similar to Robin’s which can check out here. I’m definitely loving that appreciation for wax print fashion.
