Alicia Keys Wears Tsemaye Binitie, Christie Brown, & Anita Quansah London for Her Vibe April May 2012 Cover Feature
What Alicia Keys wore for her VIBE April/May 2012 took away from that eye-catching headline
“Her First Real Interview.” Although curious minds want to know what that headline implies, Twitter was abuzz with excitement when it was revealed that Alicia wore not one but THREE designs from African fashion designers – Tsemaye Binitie (Nigeria), Anita Quansah London (Nigeria/Ghana) and Christie Brown (Ghana). Alicia wore two stunning jackets from Tsemaye Binitie Autumn 2011 collection and she completed her look with strand and fringe necklaces by Christie Brown. This is not the first time Alicia Keys has embraced African fashion. Remember her stunning Boxing Kitten outfits on the set of her “Put It In A Love Song” music video awhile ago? Perhaps her son Egypt and her influential trip to Africa has motivated Alicia to wear designs straight from the motherland? Nonetheless it’s always great to see African fashion designers featured in mainstream media. Kudos to Tsemaye, Anita and Christie! Getting a nod from Vibe is a well-deserved honor!

Two of the global’s biggest stars – Omotola and Gwen Stefani – put their own funky spin on cultural red carpet style. Gwen opted for the African fashion fabric prints while Omotola channeled a classic, Grecian-inspired look.
Nollywood superstar Omotola was seen in a yummy yellow Bunmi Koko low-cut pleated creation alongside the dress’s creative director Bunmi Olaye. Bunmi Koko as CulturalToast.com first reported just wrapped up their appearance at New York Fashion Week to fave praise! For those that recognize Bunmi’s lavender and yellow caftan, it made its runway debut via her Allure of the Sirens presentation at this past NYFW! It’s always great to see Nollywood embracing the African fashion scene!
Gwen Stefani wears a black and white batik-inspired pantsuit from her L.A.M.B Spring/Summer 2012 collection at the launch of her new Target children line, Harajuku Mini. It’s no secret that Gwen loves prints. Her past two collections was heavily influenced by African fashion fabrics from ankara to batik. We love that Gwen kept the same hair and the outfit as the runway look.

Tsemaye Binitie presented his Spring/Summer 2012 collection he aptly named Beautiful People at Arise Made in Africa Designer Collective show during New York Fashion. The Nigerian, London-based designer looked to his sister as his muse and inspiration Temikayo Binitie for his new collection. Tsemaye walked out with his sister after his runway presentation wrapped. Tsemaye definitely tapped into the sleeker and sporty silhouettes for his latest womenswear offering. One standout was the red silk chiffon number!

Shortly after working for Stella McCartney, Tsemaye launched his eponymous label in 2009. Tsemaye’s show enlisted high-profile models such as Chika Emmanuel, Sessliee Lopez, and Georgie Badiel. Tsemaye in his own words as told to Essence.com : I was born in Nigeria but raised internationally, I am a juxtaposed reality of a modern Nigerian. Fashion is fashion no matter where you live or are from. Women just want to be beautiful and I want to make them feel that in my clothes.

The one shoulder ruffle dress look as seen on Kimora Lee Simmons and Annie Ilonzeh marks Cultural Toast’s first This or That Edition.
This irresistable look was first worn by Kimora Lee Simmons who opted for the classy black look at the 39th Annual AFI Life Achievement Awards.
In late July Annie Ilonzeh of the upcoming Charlie’s Angels TV series was seen in a tangerine orange look with a gold waist-cinch belt at the 2011 Comic-Con event for a panel discussion with co-stars Rachael Taylor and Minka Kelly. Gotta love Annie’s Yves Saint Laurent Tribute sandals.
Cultural This or That: Do you prefer Kimora’s black or Annie’s orange? Discuss!
